SHAC is a unique and exciting new artist run housing cooperative whose core business is to secure permanent affordable housing and studio workspaces for professional artists and creatives in the City of Fremantle area. We aim to become a fully artist owned and run community resource. Sustainable Housing For Artists & Creatives Co-operative (SHAC) is a Not for Profit (NFP) Non-distributing Co-operative Registered under the Co-operatives Act 2009 trading as SHAC Ltd. working in partnership with affordable housing developer Access Housing. |
SHAC is made up of members who are all practicing professional artists and creatives. Between the SHAC members is a wealth of collective experience across a platform of creative and cultural social endeavours.
SHAC recognises that many artists are low-income professionals. Securing affordable housing and workspaces, ensures greater sustainability of income for artists, which has positive repercussions for their financial stability. |
|
The inspiration for starting SHAC is derived from a desire to create affordable housing for artists who were being priced out of the Fremantle area and support individual sole trader artists with small businesses in the arts, entertainment and recreation sector.
This grouped housing site is a mix of 1-3 bedroom townhouse type dwellings and a communal studio space, with a focus on affordable rentals plus possible shared equity and options to buy. |

SHAC’s intention is to continue the tradition of Fremantle as a city that nurtures its artistic and creative community, and is in the next phase of creating an artist initiated creative hub.
The original members of SHAC came together in a house on Stevens Street, which for 6 years had been a home to artists and their activities. Karen Hethey, a founding member, says: ‘The house had traditionally been kept in artists’ circles as it was inexpensive and could enable artists to build their practice and could (also) be used as a community resource for storage and projects – which it was on many occasions’. For the last year, since members moved into our newly-built accommodation, SHAC has been in a process of renewal and change, forming a new community, creating new policies and procedures, and developing project plans for the next phase of SHAC’s growth. |
SHAC‘s resident members are part of the new White Gum Valley (WGV) community development which has received international endorsement as a One Planet Living Community, only the 11th project in the world to receive this recognition. SHAC members believe that Access to the Arts and the development of creativity are not only Human Rights, they are a necessity for the health and happiness of the individual and the community. |
