Marcelle Riley is a Noongar textile artist creating traditional dolls, with eco dyeing and basket weaving. Collecting local bush flowers and fauna to create eco-dyed cloth, Marcelle shares her work with the community, leading workshops for CANWA, the Song Room and many other organisations.
She was born in Moora and grew up in Pingelly on her mother’s country, and now lives in Narrogin. She teaches how to make dolls representing loved ones, family and friends, and to yarn, sharing their stories. Marcelle was a finalist in the 2017 National Self Portrait Prize –for her work Bibool Yok (Paperbark Girl) the only soft sculpture selected. This exhibition is a rare chance to see and purchase many more artworks created by Marcelle in her journey as an artist, telling her story and the power of Noongar culture as a way of healing. Marcelle’s work with Story Doll’s has been recognized internationally for its community-led, healing pedagogy and she shared her process in last year’s Ted Talks; ‘How Story Dolls Heal Unspoken Trauma’ TedX Perth Sept 2019 |
Marcelle curated her first exhibition ‘KwobidakYorga’ at SHAC CoLab gallery in 2019, a celebration of Noongar female artists. This showing, will be the first time she has shown the breadth and wealth of her varied artworks in a solo exhibition.

SHAC CoLab2 Gallery New Hanging System
Hooray!! SHAC has acquired a wonderful hanging system for the Gallery, a digital projector for education and display purposes, plinths to display sculpture, and bright and visible outdoor signage! Early this year we received funding through the Stronger Communities Grant Programme. Labour MP, Josh Wilson, selected our Gallery project proposal for submission. Thanks to his office and to the work put into the application by Rachel Riggs, Lee Marshall and Stephen Lobo we were awarded the grant. |
A message to our members, friends and community March 2020
Over the last couple of weeks globally, we have been faced with a series of unprecedented challenges with the effects and disruption of COVID-19. Many of us are facing an uncertain future, and we are all coping with the changes in our daily lives.
In line with current advice from government and health authorities, SHAC is acting to protect the health and wellbeing of its members, artists, audiences and wider communities by closing the CoLab 1& 2 spaces to the general public.
Whilst SHAC had been preparing for our refurbished gallery opening this Friday with funding support from the office of Josh Wilson MP, Federal Member for Fremantle. SHAC members have taken the difficult decision to close our doors, to help stop the spread of COVID-19 in our resident and local community.
As artist members live in the SHAC residence area next to the CoLab gallery and studio spaces, we feel our duty of care is to suspend activities for our audiences for the foreseeable future. Some of our resident SHAC artists are in a high risk group from the virus, and therefore their safety within our residential area is of high priority.
Many of our SHAC members are already greatly affected by the impact of the virus, with loss of income from arts projects, performances, festivals and events cancelled. As a community of artists, creativity is at the heart of everything we do, and we will be finding creative solutions to delivering our core program.
SHAC was pleased to announce we recently received funding through the office of Josh Wilson MP, Federal Member for Fremantle, to update the CoLab 2 art gallery for enhanced community participation.
However, as a precautionary measure, from today CoLabs 1 & 2 will no longer be available to visit by the general public. The scheduled opening of Fiona Gavino’s Rust and Other Stories at 6pm on Friday 20 March is now postponed.
We will, however, be putting exhibitions in the gallery space online, so our audiences can continue to view the gallery and artwork will be available for sale at www.shacfreo.com
SHAC Incubate – established women artists mentoring emerging female future artists. Sponsored by the City of Fremantle. Fri May 1st– 15th Exhibition, Workshops & talks. SHAC will working and aiming to deliver the Incubate program online, with live access to workshops and talks, and the exhibition in a virtual gallery on our website, if the current situation remains.
To prevent the spread of illness at SHAC, we are sanitising commonly touched areas daily, as well as encouraging residents & visitors to wash their hands regularly, and people to stay at home if they are ill. SHAC thanks you for your ongoing support in these difficult times. Stay well x

Community, Culture, Collaboration, Celebration
SHAC is pleased to announce it has received funding through the office of Josh Wilson MP, Federal Member for Fremantle, to update the CoLab 2 art gallery for enhanced community participation.
CoLab will open its first exhibition – Fiona Gavino’s Rust and Other Stories – at 6pm on Friday 20 March.
“Arts practitioners and businesses are the very definition of the creative economy, and you would be hard-pressed to find leaner and meaner enterprises or people or organisations that do more with less, so it is incredibly rewarding to have been able to help
SHAC provide a professional gallery space for Fremantle’s artists.” :Comment attributable to Josh Wilson MP
“The new hanging system, signage, and up-to-date technology for displaying digital art, means SHAC can access more artists – established and emerging – to exhibit their art work in the CoLab 2 art gallery at an affordable price. This in turn facilitates artists to engage in local community, develop and grow with supported arts practice at the heart of the White Gum Valley Eco Village.” :Comment attributable to Rachel Riggs SHAC CoLabs Manager
2020 SHAC CoLab programme includes:
Rust and Other Stories – a solo exhibition by Fiona Gavino who has delved into the studio archives to create works out of found and up cycled materials, she has collected over the last 10 years. Open 6pm Friday, March 20 – until Mar 22 at 5pm.
SHAC Incubate – established women artists mentoring emerging female future artists. Sponsored by the City of Fremantle. Opening night – Fri May 1st – 6.30pm. Workshops & talks – 2nd, 3rd, 9th May. Exhibition until May 15th
ReVIVAL – curated by Lynne Tynley, a group exhibition of local artists on sustainable futures in a climate emergency environment, part of SHAC’s annual Sustainability Day in September
SHAC, in partnership with Access Housing Australia, is part of the new WGV Eco Village. The cooperative features artist residencies, and two new creative studios CoLab 1 and CoLab 2, now open to the community to hire. SHAC was funded and developed with the support of City of Fremantle, Landcorp, Access Housing, Josh Byrne & Assoc, and Architecture Studio (formerly Donaldson Warn Architects).
The federal Stronger Communities Programme provided $5,000 for SHAC’s new gallery hanging system.

'Pressed Flowers' by Mikaela Miller - FRI, DEC 6 - DEC 8
'Pressed Flowers' is Mikaela Miller's first solo exhibition, featuring all new works. For Mikaela, this show is a reconnection with studio practice after three years of working predominantly in the public realm. It is an exploration of scale, colour and technique in the process of lino-cut relief printing - pushing an otherwise familiar medium for the artist, into new and unfamiliar places.
The title, 'Pressed Flowers,' plays on the act of printmaking. Immortalisation of individual blooms, through physically pressing onto paper from a carved block is not unlike the notions of the age-old craft. The beauty of their image is taken out of its natural context and presented to us preserved and flattened - stunningly poetic, yet somehow seeming more fragile than the living subject itself. Mikaela asks us to find enjoyment and familiarity in their forms, but also to question why we may need to behold, preserve and/or document their likeness. What 'pressures' could be at play that see our normally resilient flora humbled to a more fragile existence? All works will be for sale. |
Detail - 'Diuris brumalis / Some Dreams Come True By Accident' 2019, Mikaela Miller. Lino print on paper.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Mikaela is a young artist from Fremantle. After studying both design and community development, she’s spent the last three years painting murals and facilitating a variety of community public art projects. Her works extend across metro and regional WA, featuring in cafes, street art festivals, and on community amenities. Mikaela has a keen interest in native flora and hopes to remind both herself and others to slow down, observe and savour the world around them – to look, to feel, to learn something new, and to remember little things which may have slipped by the wayside somewhere along the line. www.mikaelamiller.com Instagram : https://www.instagram.com/mikmiller_/ Facebook : https://www.facebook.com/mikaelamillercreative/ This exhibition will take place on Wadjuk Noongar country. Mikaela Miller and SHAC respectfully acknowledge the Elders of this land: past, present and emerging. We are grateful to live and work on Noongar boodja. |
Round & Round by DNA Puppetry/Imaginary Leaps
From the makers of Fringe World 2019 award winning show ‘Cloud Child’ a special production for early years children and their families. DNA Puppetry/Imaginary Leaps present their newly adapted storytelling theatre play ‘Round & Round’ in a Fremantle tour Dec 2019! Thanks to sponsorship from the City of Fremantle
‘Round & Round’ is a show specially made for very young children and their carer, highly visual with little spoken language accessible for all! There is a 30 min story telling puppetry performance with interactive, sensory play activities afterwards for 10-15 mins to aid full experiential learning and engagement. And also an originalstory book to accompany, and continue experiential learning when the performance & play is over. ‘Round & Round’ performed at TATE Britain, London, Awesome Children’s Festival and many other places! Imaginary Leaps is proud to be part of an international network of quality theatre for young children http://smallsizenetwork.org/ Imaginary Leaps’s practice starts with the exploration of physical properties (such as material and everyday objects) through simple play approaches, similar to the way children explore the world. Underpinning this exploration is the desire to transform the ordinary to the extraordinary, reflecting the ease with which children do this everyday in their imaginary play. Coordinating with Early Years Framework outlines. ‘The purpose of creating work in this way is to encourage and stimulate the imaginative play of children, engaging them as audience and participants in a process of creating characters, stories and worlds out of the everyday objects around us. When creating work for early years audiences, the company takes care not to introduce conventions, assumptions or concepts that are beyond young children’s immediate experience or comprehension.’ R.Riggs |

A Secret Geography I by Madeline Clare 10-13 October 2019

We invite you to A Secret Geography, an exhibition of work by Madeline Clare. An opening will be held on Thursday 10 September at 6pm and the exhibition will run over the whole weekend, 11 - 13 October,
11 - 4pm.
Madeline will give an artist talk in CoLab2 on Saturday 12 October at 2pm.
A SECRET GEOGRAPHY I is the first of a series of exhibitions featuring sketches and prints from time spent in deeply secret places. From moors to mountains, tongues to trikonasana, this quietly illuminative work is about paying homage to wholeness and well-being where rhythm and repetition in landscape, inside and out, merge for the organism to be eternally omnipresent. The intensity of Iceland's voluptuous volcanic backdrop and fiery underbelly with its soft, expansive rhythmic undertones has provoked deep and extensive enquiry, which is beginning to be revealed in these emotive pieces.
Madeline has been living, studying and working in Fremantle since 1998. She supports sustainable initiatives, sharing spaces and resources. This will be Madeline’s first exhibition in the Gallery at SHAC.
