Review of Ilsa Bennion’s Mesh Exhibition by Allan Tinley

30/11/2020

Ilsa’s exhibition contains recycled antique purses in various shapes and sizes. Some are wall mounted on found blocks of wood. Brightly painted in reds, yellow, greens and blue hues, they give an optimistic happy atmosphere. Each one seems to stand like a light-reflecting colourful jewel.

The refinement and fluidity of these purses speak with the gridding meshwork of the material and they flow like cascades off the wall mounts.

Ilsa speaks of her works as symbols of the philosophical and psychological processes of women’s enmeshment in the differing facets and structures of societal living.

Small ceramic sculptures are also on display. Pinch pots that have been formed with no plan or conscious thought.  The making of these glowing carmine painted pots Ilsa says is a process of self-healing and self–nourishment. From the inner to the outer, the philosophy of mind body connection. For her this is all about self-discovery, exploration and self connectedness; keys to her inner growth.

An interesting, thought provoking collection of small artworks, personal but unsentimental.

Tim Grant has exhibited throughout Australia and internationally. Photography has taken Tim to many different countries but he is always drawn back to Fremantle.Using digital technology Tim finds new meanings to mundane monotone memories – creating magical scenarios where monsters hide, disco lights flash, colours fly and party clothes appear.

Review of Secret Geography :
An Exhibition of Works by Madeline Clare, Oct 2019.

Madeline, originally from England, is a yoga teacher and visual artist, embracing voice and movement in her art practice.  Shortly before becoming a member of SHAC she spent 3 months as an Artist in Residence in Iceland.

Through the delicate discourse within her art Madeline uses a number of media: watercolour, oil on tissue paper, print, drawing, stitch and crochet.

The paintings and drawings mostly involve the Icelandic landscape but there are some nude studies, including a series of Zen-like renditions in graphite on authentic gesso-ed board.

Madeline says that her work tries to evoke landscape motion and inner spiritual movement toward inner and outer connection.

The mythologies and constructs of humankind’s understanding of the outside world come into her studies, her journeying and her playing.

She has a well thought out philosophy and a voice that should be heard.

"Secret Geography" by Madeline Clare

A Secret Geography I: 10-13 October 2019

We invite you to A Secret Geography, an exhibition of work by Madeline Clare. An opening will be held on Thursday 10 September at 6pm and the exhibition will run over the whole weekend, 11 - 13 October,
11 - 4pm.

Madeline will give an artist talk in CoLab2 on Saturday 12 October at 2pm.

A SECRET GEOGRAPHY I is the first of a series of exhibitions featuring sketches and prints from time spent in deeply secret places. From moors to mountains, tongues to trikonasana, this quietly illuminative work is about paying homage to wholeness and well-being where rhythm and repetition in landscape, inside and out, merge for the organism to be eternally omnipresent. The intensity of Iceland's voluptuous volcanic backdrop and fiery underbelly with its soft, expansive rhythmic undertones has provoked deep and extensive enquiry, which is beginning to be revealed in these emotive pieces.

Madeline has been living, studying and working in Fremantle since 1998. She supports sustainable initiatives, sharing spaces and resources. This will be Madeline’s first exhibition in the Gallery at SHAC.

The SHAC COLAB2 GALLERY by Lynne Tinley

Through the 55 years of a painting career I have always thought it would be great to have my own gallery; just down from my front door, no transport problems, no hassles getting heavy paintings from carparks up to city galleries, no exorbitant commissions. Now, in my senior years, I have the next best thing, a gallery within the community where I live.It is a communal gallery and it is just down the walkway from my front door. I can saunter down there before breakfast and do some work or sit with my mug of coffee and soak up the lightness and brightness of the walls and gentle grey polished cement floor.

The CoLab2 Gallery has the feel of community. It says ‘lets be friends’ to whoever comes in. It is serene, peaceful; with sunlight and dappled shade playing on the balcony.

It can be any artist’s dream-come-true to exhibit in this intimate and pristine space with its high ceilings. The rent for hire is affordable and there is no commission taken from sales.  We have an Application to Hire form that you can download from this website.

Small performances, book launches or poetry readings as well as exhibitions and clean workshops will be welcomed in this space. We invite you to come and have a look at the SHAC CoLab2 Gallery.
